1/14 - Friday 13:30 I toned down my lingo a bit. Read about UCITA (The Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act) at http://www.badsoftware.com/. It's a proposed new law that would change the way computer software and hardware manufacturers license their products.
1/13/00 - Thursday 15:05 I fixed the Specials page - basically a page for any stuff on TweakCentral that doesn't fit into any other category.
1/13/00 - Thursday 13:34 This Register story reports that some analysts are predicting a DRAM (memory) drought in Q2 and Q3 of 2000 to last up to 2 years. I've got a bunch of RAM in my bomb-shelter left-over from Y2K anyway. This sucks. RAM prices jumped back in September from less that $1 per MB to over $2 per MB. It's still relatively spendy right-now, compared to last summer. And now it's going to go up again? OK. This is starting to piss me off, so I'm going to set the record straight: Don't believe me? Read up, my friend: For an explanation of memory terms, see this Computer Shopper glossary of memory terms.
1/13/00 - Thursday 13:34 I'm sure this is everywhere, here's a C|Net News story about the DoJ and the rumored reports I was talking about earlier. C|Net News also reports that a Windows2000 virus has been detected. I don't think they've found it in the "wild" but it may point out vulnerabilities in the OS, it says... They're saying it's a non-issue: from the C|Net article:
1/13/00 - Thursday 11:30 There are more reports surfacing that the DoJ may favor a break-up of Microsoft. See the ZDNet News story.
1/13/00 - Wednesday 09:17 ZDNet News reports that US scientists are able to use DNA to do computations, like math problems. Pretty darn cool. Read all about it here.
1/12/00 - Tuesday 13:42 Yeah, we wish. Take-a-pull of this Register story that sites the USA Today as reporting that the DoJ will ask that Microsoft be broken up into 2 or more companies: The Register calls them "Baby Bills" - ha ha. The DoJ is desputing the report as "inaccurate in several respects," but they won't say which ones. Interesting read... TweakPC added to links - Go check it out! Douglas Hoferkamp pointed his site out to me about a month ago. I'm just now getting around to it. Sorry buddy!
1/12/00 - Tuesday 10:30 Why do bubble in Guinness (beer) go down? Some auzzie scientists set about to find the answer. See the Yahoo News story and the researchers' web-page. It has something to do with the larger bubbles moving up and the smaller bubbles being forced back down or something... I could've told you that... er... You see, at Tweak Central, besides providing our visitors with many-a-tweak, strive to provide the answers to life's more important questions. Again, becuase of the love!
1/11/00 - Tuesday 15:30 Can you tell I'm procrastinating and I don't want to do my WinNT re-installs?
1/11/00 - Tuesday 13:35 Overclockin' the Coppermine (some more): AnandTech (The loveable Anand Lai Shimpi) has an part 2 of an article up about how they got 500E's to 750MHz and 550E's to 825MHz - quickly and easily. My only beef is that you may get a 825MHz cpu for $350 but you have to spend $220+ for each 128MB's of RAM. check it outs: part 1 and part 2.
1/11/00 - Tuesday 11:49 Tweak Central Y2K compliant? You bet!
1/11/00 - Tuesday 11:49 Dumb-ass. Ok who pulled one of their NT boxes off of the domain without making sure he knew the admin name and password last night? Yeah, me... I'm ok tho. I just got the SAM file and ran a cracker (no offense, white-bread) on it. If you're into security and Windows NT, you should check out how easy it is to access NT accounts with the right tools. Just do a search on SAM password or NT or something like that.
1/10/00 - Monday 19:28 I just upgraded to DreamWeaver3 - we'll see how it goes. Expect a lot more content and quality out of me. (Picking up the sarcasm? Good. I'm laying it on pretty thick...). Is it just me, or does something need to be done about the textbook situation? My Linear Analysis book: $92 new. Huh. Ever hear of the phrase "poor college student" - yeah, that's the same guy that's expected to buy 4 of these each quarter. On top of $1000+/quarter for tuition. I guess I'm just cheap.
1/8/00 - Saturday 22:04 WEAK! Today is a day of mourning for me. The neighbor girls moved out. I saw a "for rent" sign in the window. You take for-granted how convenient it is to be able to stalk girls from the comfort of your own home. Now I have to get my black sweats and sweatshirt out of the attic...ugh. If you are, or know, some fly honeys that would like a 2 bedroom house with washer / dryer, dishwasher in a nice neighborhood, I think rent is like $675 or something... definitely give me a call!
1/8/00 - Saturday 10:25 Some researchers have announced that they have found a way to 'steal' encryption keys from servers. This could have serious reprocussions for things like ecommerce and other online security issues. See the ZDNet story here. Thanks to slashdot for the heads-up. 1/7/00 - Friday 14:40 CNet News also has a great story about your privacy online and how little control you have over your privacy and what little recourse you have when your privacy is violated. Something is going to have to be done about this sooner or later.
1/7/00 - Friday 13:30 All good things... The Register now reports Microsoft has stopped offering the $400 discount to californians who purchase a new pc and sign up for 3 years of MSN. I don't think I mentioned before, the Register reported that "A Microsoft spokesman told the Mercury that the deal was such great value he didn't expect to see many people cancelling, but Microsoft spokesmen are like that." Ha ha ha! TI and Fraunhofer to combine to produce DSP chip that could lead to portable MP3/CD players. We're talking 150 songs on a disc, ok? Products may be available as early as the end of Q2/2000. See the CNet News story. I noticed a company called Vertical Horizons which already has a prototype portable CD/MP3 player ready, but it isn't available for purchase yet.
According to this Wired story, if you're a hacker, the US Army may want you. They are making preparations for potential future cyber-combat. (Thanks to Slashdot). You get to work with some cool hardware and serve your country: what a deal!
1/6/00 - Thursday 13:54 Corel stock is up 5 1/2 to 21 1/8 on news that their upcoming version of their LINUX OS will allow users to run some Windows programs. See the MSNBC story. I saw it first on ZDNews, but they took down their story. Here's the scoop from Corel. I found the ZDNews story here. That would be pretty cool. The only thing really keeping me off of linux is the fact that I need to use Windows aps to do the things I like to do (pr0n - oops. I mean update this web-site... with love!)
1/6/00 - Thursday 11:33 Hey. I'm at school. I'm updating with notepad - now that's dedication boy... Something came up last night when I was in the middle of updating this page. I'll put up the news as soon as I hear back from the authorities. Anyway... Use Windows 9x? Use TCP/IP? (duh) Get Microsoft's patch. - Thank you Aaron Quast over at voodooextreme. 900MHz, can you imagine? The guys over at Tech-Report (they're nuts) have an 800MHz AMD Athlon running at 900MHz with stock cooling. Read about it here. People are jumping on the PentiumIII 500/550E bandwagon. The E means it's a .18 micron "coppermine" core (that's just a code-name, it's still aluminum, not copper). These things overclock like that cat that got into the xmas lights on National Lampoon's. Read about it here: SharkyExtreme article and GamePC article. And H-Oda has released the latest
version of WCPUID 2.7a. Get
it here (thanks Tech-Report).
This little proggie basically gives you a bunch of information about what
CPU you're running and things like cache-latency and the like. Use in
conjunction with SoftFSB
for maximum enjoyment.
1/5/00 - Wednesday 15:44 Get it while it lasts! Check out this Register story If you live in California, You can buy a computer with the MSN $400 rebate,
cancel the MSN subscription and viola, your computer was $400 cheaper.
I don't expect this to last long, so take advantage of it while you can.
I wonder if there are similar laws in other states? Don't say I never do anything for ya' In other news, there's a lot of interesting things coming out of the MacWorld expo: as if.
1/4/00 - Tuesday 12:00 School started today: Woo Hoo! Yeah! Sweet! I'm 25!!! Anyway, Tech-Review has a great page up called weekly cpu-prices, not to be confused with weekly cpu prices over at SharkyExtreme. Tech-Review claims that they will update every Tuesday - we'll see. I like the site, I think I'll add it to the links. Warning, rant follows: What I really like about their guide is that they point out that some companies ream...er overcharge you for shipping. For example, $20+ to ship a 1oz cpu, which can't weigh more than a pound with packing (these are OEM chips, not retail boxes) UPS ground... give me a f***ing break! That's one of my biggest beefs with online computer stores... It's so common. They might-as-well give the damn things away and charge $500 for shipping. What's the difference between that and what they do now? Acutally - That would make sense for them, since they don't refund shipping charges. Hmmm.... Coming soon! Free CPUs available at Tweak Central* (Shipping and Handling charges apply). Seriously, as long as you factor shipping into the price, it's really no big deal. Rant complete Nikos Bozinis sends word that 2xExplorer (file manager) has been updated and a new "RR" version is available. Check out his site here. I have to admit I haven't had a chance to try this proggie yet, but if he says there's a link to it on my site, well it's got to be good?
1/3/00 - Monday 15:32 New Internet Explorer5 security settings page and No Cookies page updated. Sick of all those pop-up windows? Lock down IE5 tighter than your cheap-ass friend's wallet - Tweak Central shows you the way. Enjoy! Into Althon overclockin'? I know I am - and I don't even own an Athlon. Tech-report's got some info you might dig. If you're not in the know, there's what's called "The golden fingers" (Nominee for Tweak Central's 1999 Product name of the year - can I get a second?) which is a little home-made device you stick on your Athlon CPU to make it GO FASTER.
1/3/00 - Monday 09:37 I hope all of you had a great holiday-time...whatever it's called...
Notice how I ended up not doing anything with this site over break? Official excuse: I've had my hands full with my non-functional email and home network that's giving me headaches to no-end. In reality, I've got some ideas for a re-vamped links/files section and as soon as I get something I like, I'll zap it up... Get out your 600 grit wet/dry (sandpaper, my friend) it's time to smooth out your CPU. Check out this article over at PC Stats. If you haven't heard of the Darwin Awards, check 'em out. Darwin awards are basically true stories of human stupidity. Unfortunately, most of them end with someone (or more people) dying, but what good story doesn't? - Have patience my son, their server is a kinda slow. And thanks to Jeremy for the heads-up.
1/1/00 - Saturday 14:09 HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! From Tweak Central! I wish all of you a safe and happy
new year! Let's make 2000 the best yet! |
