Archived News - what WAS new:

Archived News - January 2000: (1/17/00 - 1/31/00)

1/31 - Monday 13:36

Look at this jerk: (courtesy JC's) I swear I'm going to go into photoshop and airbrush, I mean put up some screen-captures of my 600...er 1300MHz machine. Weasel!

1/31 - Monday 08:27

The archived news for January wasn't linked up right: I fixed that.

Tech review has an interesting article about the "Coppermine" P3 and what makes it SO DARN SPECIAL!

Not much going on...

1/26 - Wednesday 22:11

I saw this news over on slashdot: MotionWare is developing a device that you can wear behind your ear and it lets you experience simulated motion. Read the BBC story. Kinda cool.

1/25 - Tuesday 21:58

Here it comes. Our favorite internet-user tracking company (Doubleclick) has begun tracking web-surfters by their real information such as name, home-address and phone number. Read all about your privacy rights being eroded away:

1/24 - Monday 13:42

There's a cool story in the New York Law Journal about our privacy rights being eroded away.

H-Oda has a new WCPUID2 out: I think this one lets you control your Athlon cache settings (?) and a new version of WPCUID out: v.2.7b (update). (thanks Ars)

AMD will be releasing new versions of their Athlon processor soon. They've been planning this for a while... A "coppermine" version with .18 micron die with 256k of on-board (full-speed?) L2 cache and a "celeron" (.18 micron) with 128k of (full-speed?) L2 cache. They call them "El-Camino" and "Pinto" ... oops, I mean "Thunderbird" and "Spit-fire" - If you think those names are lame, wait 'til Marketing goes to work!

Read the full EE-Times story (thanks again Ars) - boy do they got good news or what?

VoodooExtreme has a snippet on the BitBoys (Oy!) press release concerning their upcoming (cough... vaporware... cough) Glaze3D chipset. It's supposed to blow the doors off of all other video cards out there... we'll see (cough... s3... cough).

1/22 - Saturday 13:20

I guess I should warn you. If you haven't already heard, CNN is reporting that some users are having trouble with the AOL 5.0 upgrade. Appearantly, it disables other internet-access or dial-up settings or something.

This reminds me: I remember reading once on slashdot someone compared these invasive installations and "upgrades" to trojans and viruses. Depending on how you look at it, the difference is pretty trivial.

Compaq - Ok. I am trying to fix this Compaq notebook for a friend. I finished everything except the video and display drivers. I went to compaq and they're not listed anywhere on the site. So I "registered" (don't get me started") for their forums and found about 30+ people (in the last week) looking for video drivers. Obviously no response from Compaq. Great company. I looked absolutely everywhere for information on what video drivers I would need: I couldn't find anything.

One user posted a link to DriverGuide.com. This place has lots of drivers. I normally swing by WinDrivers.com but they primarily have links to manufacturers sites. DriverGuide.com allows users to post (upload) drivers directly and post links to drivers. I found the compaq display drivers I needed. My only beef with this site is that instead of being a drivers site for people to get drivers. It's a marketing site where they require you to "register" and then receive spam from them. So it's a trade-off. I might be able to save some people some grief: the username is "drivers" the password is "all."

1/20 - Thursday 16:20

I have control over space and time, so I can acquire images of events before they happenDon't forget the lunar eclipse tonight. If you live in North America or Western Europe, you're supposed to be able to see it. This lunar eclipse information page has some relevant info like the times, but I think it's going to be visible for a while (if you can make-it-out through the clouds). As always, prepare your sacrifice accordingly .

And Ars has some more information about the Crusoe up. They've got LOTS of in-depth information about this bad boy - GREAT READ!

1/20 - Thursday 13:18

Bust a gut. I almost pee'd myself when I read this article. A guy in the computer-science lab found it. It's not computer-related, but we could all learn from this guy's hasty career-choice. The lession to be garnered from his tribulations: do your research before jumping into a career. Click here to read the article from The Onion.

1/19 - Wednesday 15:15

I gota get to work, but 2 things:

1. Transmeta - this might be hot (understatement?). They unveiled 2 new processors today and technology that might revolutionize mobile computing. Hype? Maybe - read for yourself:

CNet News story
ZDNet News story

Transmeta press release

2. AMD posts strong Q4 earnings. Read more:

ZDNet News story
AMD Press release

AMD's stock is in-play in after-hours trading.

I'll try and dig up more information for you later...

1/18 - Tuesday 23:56

Have you seen this? CDDB. The Winamp (mp3 player) v2.5e comes with it. I guess a lot of other cd and mp3 players have it too. Basically, when you pop a CD in your drive, your computer contacts the CDDB database and pulls up all the title and track info. Pretty darn cool. But then I'm impressed by escalators, so..

And what's up with this guy? Click here to be made jealous (it's a 250k jpg file). If you have a "skinny pipe," I'll spare you the wait. It's a screen-capture of a 992MHz AMD Athlon system with 392Megs of 248MHz DDR RAM, if I read it correctly, which was difficult 'cus I was fogging up the monitor, if you know what I mean. Oh please! I had Britney Spears in another window... Give me some credit .

Oh and that auction for the $500 microsoft check is up to $5000.00 last time I checked. A fun thing to do is to go and bid on things that are really expensive to see if you can up the price without winning! I do it all the time!

1/18 - Tuesday 15:20

Remember that guy that paid the $35 passport.com registration fee to interNIC. He received a $500 check from Microsoft and is auctioning it on eBay. And get this: proceeds to go to charity. This guy is a champ! Go take a look, and place a bid to up the price for the final buyer - it's all for charity! (Thanks Sky for the heads-up).

You gotta go look!

I got my hair cut today... Hmmm... oh, you don't care...

1/17 - Monday - Martin Luther King Jr. Day - 12:30

Wow! Check out this Ars article on the new Mac OS GUI - it's pretty darn cool, and translucent. Yeah, it's great, but how important is that? Is it just eye-candy™? How long will it take M$ to copy it? HA.

1/17 - Monday - Martin Luther King Jr. Day - 11:58

If you haven't already, maybe we all should take a moment and think of how each one of us can help, in at least a small way, make this world a better place for everyone.

Shut up and do it!

On a lighter note:

Check out the linux fish. If you're from a hill-billie-(stuck in the 50's, but without the prosperity)-town like I am, these things abound (not with linux in 'em tho). A friend of mine has a funny one - it says "satan" and has little horns and a pointy-tail. I thought it was kinda funny...
Wanna know all about tha' fish? Go see the Complete fish taxonomy (don't miss the farside alien fish).

Ok. Now don't laugh - I want to start a site where I (and hopefully others) offer help to newbie computer users. We won't call 'em newbies tho, we'll call 'em lamers, but not to their face... like when you make fun of customers at your work... anyway... I'm in the process of getting the domain name (MydomainwastakensoIgotstuckwiththislameasssentence.com) but I think it's taken. As soon as I get a domain tho, I'll get started on it.

I know... "I thought *this* site was supposed to help, and it doesn't do sh*t?" - shut up and... well... go think about Martin Luther King some more...

Seriously you guys, if anyone is interested in contributing to a site that helps beginning computer users, let me know. I would especially like a Mac or Linux guru. No-pay (for now). I know I'm sparse of info.

And could someone tell me what is up with all the "fly" companies? (like flycast and flyswat) Is it just me, or are flies gross? Haven't these guys seen "The Fly"? - or the discovery channel. Whatever... I guess good domains-names are all taken or something...
