2/16 - Wednesday 23:42 Anand-Tech's got a new look: I dig it. Now there's a site with some content. Anand probably does more reviews than anyone else: he really knows his stuff. He's also got the low-down on Intel and new IDF developments. Go check it out!
2/16 - Wednesday 21:20 Bubble-gummers listen up: This is disturbing, but not too suprising: Net users spend less time in the real world (CNet). Oh yeah? Maybe the Net is the real world and what you think is the real world is just a made-up... I need to leave the house!
2/16 - Wednesday 1:07 Intel I guess doesn't like Firewire (IEEE 1394) can you blame them really? (wtf?) so they are introducing a new standard they are calling Serial ATA. Intel wants Serial ATA to replace the current ATA/66 (and older versions of ATA) for connecting internal devices (Hard Drives, CD-Roms). They appearantly have a few hard-drive manufacturers on board: IBM, Maxtor, Seagate and Quantum. Last year, Intel touted USB2 as the alternative to FireWire... who knows what's going on there... The Register's got the scoop and some stats. Willamette update:
2/15 - Tuesday 12:15 Misc news: This thing's kinda cool: Phonetic.com: it lets you turn your phone-number into words and vice-versa. My home phone is "Mr-11-RAD" Awesome! Oh wait, I mean "555..." or something - don't call me. My bad, DoubleClick does care about end-user privacy and stuff: Register
story and PCWorld
story.
Want to know about hardware? Duane's Homepage (http://www.hardware-sg.com/) has got a ton of info on a variety of topics. Holy crap: speaking of hardware: A complete illustrated guide to PC Hardware. Pretty self-explanatory. I'll add these 2 site to the hardware links...
Intel Developer Forum developments: I can't keep up with the IDF news so screw it. JC updated his site with more news and what he (we all) would really like to know about Willamette details. Here are 2 Register stories on the Willamette news: http://theregister.co.uk/000215-000017.html & http://theregister.co.uk/000215-000015.html "Willamette" - by the way is just another one of those pacific-northwest words used as a code-word for Intel's upcoming next-generation x86 processor.
2/15 - Tuesday 11:20 Intel demo's 1.5GHz Willamette processor at IDF: CNet News There's also this story on Silicon Investor (I stole this link from JC's). Speaking of JC's he's got some juice on the upcoming Willamette chip. I can't wait to hear what creative, new name Intel's marketing will give this chip. I bet it won't be Pentium-4 (dripping with sarcasm).
2/15 - Tuesday 9:08 Cameron Wilmot has a Tweakin' site to share with us: TweakTown - It's a good-lookin site, go take a pull. I'll put it on the Links page too. Intel reveals details of upcoming (1GHz) chips: (ZDNet article) More news from IDF.
2/15 - Tuesday 1:20 Just slackin': I had to find out about all this stuf from Ars - thanks guys! Winamp 2.6 out: www.winamp.com (any of you guys (when I say guys, I mean people) on that shoutcast yet? If so, let me know how you like it!). For those who don't know, winamp plays mp3's. If you haven't seen it yet, check it out! IE 5.5 +Tools (beta) out: I don't know what happened to 5.1 thru 5.4, but then again, it's better than "2000" or "Millenium" I guess. I give up: I'm tired of copying all of the news on Ars: go check it out for yourself.
I'm insulted. I should've been contacted by now. Rest assured, I will
write a letter and find out who's responsible: New SoftFSB released: Go visit H.Oda to have
your "front-side bus" adjusted if you know what I mean. If there
are any female visitors who would like their "front-side bus"
adjusted personally, please contact me to schedule an appointment Eurogamer (heh heh...) has a pretty nifty write-up on DirectX 8 or 9 or whatever... I've never been a huge fan of DirectX, ActiveX or anything Microsoft makesX, but I suppose it does let game developers do what they do best instead of writing graphics driver hacks like they did in the good-ol' days.
2/15 - Tuesday 00:17 Slashdot gives the heads-up that Virginia's House has passed the UCITA (unanimously). It looks like the Virginia Senate and governor will support the bill as well. I'm getting the feeling that "the industry" will steam-roll this thing right through and boy will we all be sorry. The time will come when end-users will either want to part-own a software company or leave the country. As usual, head over to badsoftware.com for all your UCITA information needs. Intel Developer Forum: Andy Grove speaks - The Register has some snippets of Intel chairman Andy Grove's comments.
2/14 - Monday 16:10 The Register has a story about Intel's plans for CPUs and memory this year. They're firmly sticking to their original plans of RDRam (Rambus) as their future platform for memory. Even though a single 128Meg RIMM (huh huh) costs $1G. Intel is going to introduce quite a few new CPUs this year - it'll be interesting to see how different the CPU landscape looks by the end of the year. The web's busiest review-monkey, our beloved Anand has a review of AMD's latest 850 Athlon. It kicks-ass, no-doubt and overclock's like there's no tomorrow. RSA web-site hacked: Register story, 2600 capture - funny, there's no mention of it on RSA's site now? Maybe it just never happened. Oh yeah, Valentino's Day sucks!
2/13 - Sunday 2:13 Kinda cool - EETimes article on how an FPGA (Fully programmable Gate Array) can be used to "create or crack encryption schemes." We learned about PGA's in school and encryption is a cool topic. Oh yeah: I'm selling my cel-phone on eBay. It's a year-old Ericsson KH668 - it'll go cheap. If you need a battery for an ericsson phone, I'm selling 2 Ultra-Slim batteries also.
2/12 - Saturday 10:33 There are a bunch of interesting stories on slashdot today - go check'em out.
2/12 - Saturday 10:33 Here's a neat little snippet I saw on CNet News: Appearantly, some HotBot results are showing 1899 instead of 1999. Reps at HotBot are looking into the glitch.
2/11 - Friday 14:15 Whiners who profit by trying to circumvent the DNS system becuase they suck and by the time they tought of the domain name they wanted, it was 1999 and their name was taken: (aka Realnames) was hacked today according to CNet News. That's a shame. "But ** I ** want that name.com! Waaah!" According to the article, the customer database was hacked. Fortunately for their customers, without the realnames system, there's no way for the hackers to associate the records they've obtained with real-world domains! HA. My friend sky brought this site to my attention: somethingawful.com I wanted that name for this site, but it was taken, so I got the "realname"! Anyway, this guy "Lowtax" basically rants about stuff... pretty cynical? He ranks on the guys who make this web-site, and the other site I run (warning: it's pretty gross). Here's a quote to get you started: ... According to a "testimonial" on the website,
"This Is What Canada Needs. Young Courteous & Professional Youth Who Can
Strive For Perfection." I can think of many things offhand that Canada
needs, and "Professional Youth" isn't one of them. I'd probably rank "running
hot and cold water" above that. Sky also pointed this out to me: Actor Jim Varney, who played Ernest in all those Ernest movies died of lung-cancer - kinda sad, vern. Fixed the dates: and cool is speelled with 2 'o's.
2/9 - Wednesday 10:42 Microsoft to require mandatory registration for some future software (Word) in an attempt to thwart piracy? ZDNet News story here. They also announced some new anti-piracy measures for Windows2000, like a hologram that covers the entire CD? and a new COA. ZDNet is also reporting that Microsoft has given their new Operating System code-names. Whistler and Blackcomb. It just makes you want to go skiiing. Whistler Blackcomb is a ski resort in nearby (gotta-love'em) Canada. This information is pretty lame - I don't know why anyone would care, but go check out the Whistler Blackcomb web-site: it's pretty cool.
2/9 - Tuesday 21:24 My, my Miss American Pie... My friend Aaron sent me this news clipping - It's kinda graphic:pie.jpg (31k) I don't know what's up with kids these days... I remember when... oh nevermind... Update: My friend sky said that this is fake...
2/8 - Tuesday 9:11 I found the coolest site yesterday: ResellerRatings. I've thought about starting a site like this a couple of times, but never got around to it. Basically they use a "feedback" system (ala ebay) where users can post positive or negative feedback about their experiences with online retailers. There were 2 or 3 companies I was about to order from - and the ratings changed my mind. Like when asked "Would you shop at this company again?" and 20 users say no, and only 2 say yes... It fills a gap between the BBB, whose ratings are pretty inadequate and BizRate which has like 5 to 10 page questionaires - this is quick-and-dirty!
CNet is reporting that some software companies are starting to capitalize on the privacy concerns of computer users. They are making software that helps protect your privacy in one way or another. This isn't anything new, but most of the products I've heard about were a lot of talk: let's see how this goes...
2/4 - Friday 12:45 Breaking news: I just saw this on CNet News: Oh my God... If I ever meet anyone from the "Marketing Department" I swear... Just read this for yourself... ugh: Microsoft names new consumer OS: Windows Me Ay Caramba!
2/4 - Friday 12:30 Sorry for the lack of updates: I've been bogged down by school. But I
do have a slew of news and links and In the news: I saw on slashdot (congratulations on being acquired! again!): Researchers at IBM keep pluggin' along on the road to nano-technology: LA Times story. I also saw on slashdot - someone has made a LEGO machine-gun and I think the instructions are online too. It supposedly fires 500 rounds-per-minute. I "used-to" make space-ships with my legos! While I was on the LATimes (nice lookin' site by-the-way) this story caught my eye: Software makers aim to dilute consumer rights. Now that can't be? Why would anyone do a thing like that? $$$. oops. Salon's got a pretty good article on mp3's and online music: read up. How long can the recording industry keep their nazi-death-grip on music? And another slashdot-esque news site has popped up: Wide-open news.
On the tweak-tip: TimHiggins.com - Ok, now here's a web-site! If you want information about hooking up to cable, DSL or any other braodband hookup, this is your place! It's got a ton of information, How-to's, reviews and if you want to hook up your home LAN to the internet, definitely check it out! Shields Up! Pretty nerdy name, but it's on the SpinRite5 site: I've been here before - can't remember why though. Anyway, Shields Up! Has some cool information about protecting your Windows network from prying eyes and intruders and what-not. And I saw this page on Windows magazine about how to fix or speed-up Windows98 disk defragmenter? Personally, I use WindowsNT, and it doesn't need defragmenting, right sky? There! I updated the site! You happy now? |
