According to the guys at Ars, Kyle of HardOCP fame and his wife Suzi has a baby the other day. Here's a pic of the new family. Congratulations guys! He has named the boy A.R. Bennett - and has apparantly already forgotten what "A.R." stands for. Huh...

Microsoft to gamers: "We do voice"
source: VoodooExtreme

08/10 - 16:03

I was wondering when this was going to happen. Microsoft has been eying voice-communications for games for some time and it was only a matter of time before it became a reality. My guess is they were trying to figure out a way to make money off of it. With gamevoice, there is a "lite" version available free from the site but you must buy a US$50 device to get all of the features.

AMD releases upcoming 64-bit processor details
source: CNet news

08/10 - 16:03

AMD today released the details of it's upcoming 64-bit sledgehammer processor. AMD is adopting its own strategy for the move to 64-bit processors. In a nutshell: Intel has teamed up with HP to work on EPIC (Enhanced Parallel Instruction Computing?), IA-64 (Intel Architecture) and "Itanium" (formerly Merced) as their 64-bit strategy. IA-64 is a completely new architecture and not compatible with with current x86 software. AMD's strategy is to extend the current 32-bit x86 architecture and their 64-bit processors will be backwards compatible with 32-bit x86 software.

"Roll your own" dip-switches for the A7V
source: Tom's unbaised hardware

08/09 - 01:54

Frank Volkel at Tom's shows you poor bastards that happen to own an A7V without multiplier dip-switches how to add your own. This one's not for the faint-at-heart. Think of it this way, if you botch this, the A7V you buy to replace the one you broke will come with the dip-switches on it.
Now that's what I call tweakin!

Undocumented A7V fsb dip-switch settings
source: TweakCentral, who else?

08/07 - 14:09

Got an A7V motherboard? Did you turn off the JumperFree 'cus the BIOS kept resetting your voltage settings? Want to change the fsb? I put up a page just for you. All the fsb settings the A7V can do can be set with the dip-switches. Check it out.

Essential softare: bootpart

08/07 - 03:34

If you want to organize loading of multiple operating systems, bootpart is a must. Bootpart is a simple little program that will look at your partitions and can (re)write the MBR (Master boot record) to modify or correct for DOS or Win9x installs. I can also modify the Boot.ini (Win2k/NT) which controls what OS'es you see on the multiple boot menu. Bootpart can also help you configure LINUX and OS/2 multiple boot scenarios.
The price? Free. Gilles Vollant, the author, simply asks that you send him a postcard from your city. What a guy!

Quickie Update part deux
source: me again

08/06 - 23:54

I've got Dreamweaver3 up and running. I just made this quickie mod to the web-site. I should be ready do add some content soon (yeah right).
For those of you who are interested, this 927MHz box is running rock-solid (not to gooch it) and I'm pretty happy with Win2k and WinME so far. Win2k has a few visual enhancements like menus fading in and out, I turned them all off so now you can't tell the difference between this and my old NT4 box. Except that Win2k eats 100MB of memory all by itself. And who says MS sells bloatware? Maybe I should turn some stuff off or something?

Quickie Update
source: yours truly

08/06 - 05:17

Ooooooh Yeeeaaaahh!
I'm just gettin' warmed up

I'm doing this in Notepad so plz forgive me. OK. What have I been up to the last week with no updates where there's clearly a lot of news out there? I've been trying to get this damn dual-boot(y) Win2000/WinME (has WinME even been released yet?!?) AMD Athlon (Tbird) "700"(yeah right)MHz box to work. I have finally got everything up and running and I couldn't be happier.

I have a bunch of stuff I want to post (read "more links for you!") but I came across a lot of awesome information trying to troubleshoot my OS installs. And if you think I'm any kind of a "guru" or that people who sleep with their computers don't mess up. I had to install Win2k I think 5 times, Win98 6 times and WinME twice. So don't be afraid to mess up once in a while, or 13 times in 2 days. Like my parents say, "STFU" I mean they say, "it builds character..."

Oh yeah. This is funny. When you're plugging in memory modules, they go in two ways: the RIGHT way and the WRONG way. It's pretty obvious because they only fit one way. Unless you force it. And then when you turn your computer on, smoke comes out that smells like when a fat moth flies into one of those cheap halogen lamps. I always joke about smoke, but I can't remember ever "smoking" anything. Well there's a first time for everything! Um... TweakCentral is offering RAM installation at 10% off now.

And for those OC'ers out there (you know who you are) I just got my ALPHA FC-PAL35T HSF today - it's pretty darn cool. I don't know what a heatsink/fan is supposed to do, but my temps from my (I thought it was good) GlobalWin FDP32 where like 50+º C/122+º F range. I slapped the Alpha on there and my temps dropped to the 39º C range. With the FDP32, the fastest I could get the CPU up to was 909MHz, with the Alpha: 927 so far... I got my alpha from CoolerGuys - they're local boys - they're in Bellevue, so they "represent the east-side" whatever that means ...

btw for those interested, I have "undocumented" **FSB*** dip-switch settings for ASUS A7V - no big deal, but the manual/board only list 100, 103, 105 and 110. The BIOS will let you any of the 16 there really are, but if you turn off "Jumperless" mode, you need the settings to select the proper fsb. Anyway, I'll get them up soon, if you can't wait and I'll zap 'em to you.

*NOTE: No posts from 07/31 to 08/06 - my computers were being rebuilt (see above).
