Billy "Wicked" Wilson launches new game site

gaminggroove logoBilly "Wicked" Wilson, of VoodooExtreme, known for "pimping" game news (whatever that means) has launched a new gaming news site: GamingGroove. I obtained a list of names they were considering but rejected, here's a taste:
486net
AltairNews
CommodoreExtreme
BansheeTimes
AllAboutDOS

I'm suprised they picked a name that wasn't about an obsolete product so people wouldn't know what it means ... Go put it in your favorites, so you know what's up with the latest games.

What I really am suprised about is that they didn't call it "XBox Time", since I have a feeling that's all that will be on there soon...

A few weeks ago, a visitor Dave, sent me a link to a filter called Proxomitron:

I use a program called Proxomitron which does all this and more, for free. It rewrites the HTML of a page before it reaches the browser so you can take out anything, or put stuff in.

It uses filters, little text files, which users can download or make up themselves - there are filters to do everything from removing javascript / banner / tx3 adverts, taking out flash, adding custom menu`s or css, killing autoplaying music, re-using or killing popup windows and getting rid of add on HTML (like that of Geocities sites) to changing HTML headers to hide referrers or use browsers on sites requiring specific brands, etc etera.

This sounds like a dream-come-true. I just installed it and it's already blocking ads the hosts file doesn't catch.

A couple things for Windows XP users today:
It seems that microsoft has an Expert Zone for "Windows XP enthusiasts" who apparently want more hype about XP.

Change your WinXP start start button button:
ColdOC has posted this guide.

I found this site on Microsoft's WinXP expert zone:
Doug's Windows 95/98/ME/XP Tweaks and Tips - there might be some stuff for you there...

Create a shortcut to lock your computer:
Instead of giving the ol' 3-finger salute (ctrl-alt-del), and L or Enter, you can create a shortcut (icon) to do it. According to HardOCP reader Kris, a simple win logoWindows Key + L will do it too (may only work in XP only, it doesn't seem to be working for me with Win2k).

A side note: This guy seems to have a pretty good idea:
Fat Chuck's Corrupt CD's
It seems the music industry has started shipping cd's that either

1. Prevent you from copying it for personal use or
2. Prevent you from playing on any computerized device (computers, DVD players, game consoles like PlayStation, MP3 players, consumer CD duplicators, high-end stereo equipment and car CD players).

If you come across a corrupt cd that isn't listed, you can send it in and Fat Chuck will post it. Seems like a good idea to me.

Windows XP slower than Windows 2000?
source: InfoWorld (link from Inquirer)

This article on InfoWorld shows Windows 2000 outperforming Windows XP on typical(?) workloads. The tests did show WinXP closing the gap with multiple processors, but still slower than Win2k (and only nerds run SMP ).

Maybe it's not quite time to upgrade. Like any of the "latest and greatest" from Microsoft, you might want to buy the latest and greatest hardware to run it on.
