Internet Basics

On this page, I'll try to give you some basic information on
how to use the internet to get things done.
There's a lot I want to add here, so bear with me... I'll try to put more
info up soon...

Finding
what you want: Internet searching
|
|
You can find just about anything through the internet. Absolutely everything
isn't on the web (yet) and it doesn't hurt if what you're looking for
is computer-related.
Here's basically what I do:
There are three major search-engines I use to find things. While the
more engines you use, the more chance you'll have of finding what you
want, I suggest using a few core engines and don't hesitate using more
resources if you still can't find what you're looking for.
The key to finding what you want, is to scan lots of information,
throwing out everything irrelevent to what you want and following links
and leads that look promising.
I
like to open every link in a new-window so when that way I have easy
access to the search-engine-results page and all the new pages as well
(no going back and forth between pages).
This technique also lets you read a current page while other pages load,
making a little better use of your waiting time.
Another key is to choose the right words and refine your search well.
Try to choose words that are unique to what you're looking for and don't
apply to other subjects.
Keep in mind, some search engines (like infoseek) assume two words mean:
find all the pages that have EITHER ONE or BOTH of the words in them.
You can also specify that you want only the results with BOTH words
by using special terms like "AND" or "+". You can
also exclude words by using "NOT" or "-" depending
on the search-engine.
A tip when using FastFTP is you can enter parts of the filename you're
looking for (in order), (ie if you're looking for ps502.zip you can
enter "ps zip" and it wil return all the filenames with "ps"
in them followed by "zip.")
