computing news sites

CNet
News
Pretty much the authority on computing news.
CNewz
Unfortunately, CNEWZ is no more.
All the computer news that happens in a day in one place. You don't
have to check a dozen sites to see what's new.
C't english pages
(I have no idea what that stands for)
C't is a German magazine that does some technical reviews of processors
EETimes
Highly technical industry news
EBN News
Cutting edge technical industry news.
Electic
Tech
Your one-stop news site. Hit this page, and you'll know all the
goings on in the nerdly community.
Although they may not know to spell
Infoworld
Electric News
More industry news.
The
Inquirer
Mike Magee's site. Mike was the founder of The
Reg. His new site kicks much ass and he "comes strong"
with more breaking news
than anyone else. So you "better recognize."
Internet World
Can you say e-commerce news? how about B2B?
The
ONION
The anti-news - absolutely hi-larious
Red Herring
Industry news with a business slant
The
Register (UK)
Biting the hand that feeds IT (get it?)
Slashdot
(/.)
News for nerds - stuff that matters
These guys are too 1337 for their own good!
WIRED
They try to be all "hip" and fail miserably .
But a good news site none-the-less.
ZDNews
A great site, sometimes a little slow on really technical stories

PC
Magazine
Great reviews, but way mainstream, what does that mean? they always
recommend ATI video cards: what does that tell ya?
PC World
update - 01/17/01: The funny thing is, PCWorld cleaned up their
front-page and now I think I have more links on my front page than
they do... The irony...
Their homepage holds the world record for number of links on a single
page: 1,253 links!
Windows
Magazine (WinMag)
They have a great "WinList" (Editor's choices), do good
reviews and have excellent "tips" check 'em out
WindowsNT Magazine
don't get me started - basically 3+ month old magazine articles
- last time I checked.

BBC
Great world-news site
CNN
The name in news
CNBC
I get stock-quotes here... I guess there are other places to do
that...

Search
engines I use
|
update 02/03/01:
Well I just
found out that all search engines (even Google) offer paid placements.
It's kinda like when your parents tell you Bill Gates is real...
just a little less innocence in the world (and me being a little
less nieve).
Dogpile
Is great becuase you give it one query and it gives you results
from 10 or more search-engines - thnx Jeremy.
FAST (ftp - LYCOS)
I don't use this any more - I use GNUTELLA, but FAST is useful if
you need to find a specific file by name.
Google
I like google. It seems to work really well. Google "powers"
(...ugh) Yahoo now.
infoseek (go.com)
infoseek (go.com) sucks-ass now. I don't use it
They used to be good, but now it gives me so few results and they
sell placement so...
Hotbot
Hotbot has a cool feature that lets you search other languages
and by "within the last xx days/months... etc"
Yahoo
Yahoo is something else. It's like a listing more than a search
engine. If you want to find a certain website or webpage, use yahoo.
Yahoo is also great if you're trying to find a certain business.

Search engines I
don't use

PC
Magazine
AltaVista
Wow - altavista finally bought their domain-name. I remember forever,
it was altavista-something/~something... anyway
Excite
Lycos
NorthernLight
get a name
Astalavista.box.sk
find crackz and serialz for software - like if you forget or something

Pricewatch
If you're a techie, you use pricewatch to find the best prices.
It's like the epitome of the free-market system.
WARNING: keep in mind people abuse
the system, so these are imaginary prices and expect to pay out
your arse for shipping. (for example, 128MB PC133 SDRAM DIMM - price:
free, shipping: $130. Net cost to you $130.) Just keep that in-mind.
ResellerRatings.com
If you plan to buy from a place you've never done business with
before, definitely check them out here first.
TVGuide.com
Sick of waiting for the listings to cycle on channel 99 - see
'em all at once
AtlasF1
A great source for formula 1 news and results
CNN/Si
formula1 page
I guess CNN/Si covers formula 1.
