Adding more security zones to Windows (Internet explorer)

07/19/00

page 2/2

Page 2:

3. Export an existing zone's registry key:

Pick a zone any zone (except zone 0) and highlight the key (folder icon) and hit File | Export Registry Key. Select a file name that you can remember and save the file to somewhere you can find it. Regedit will then create (export) a .reg (text) file for you. Like this:

4. Edit the existing zone's registry key to add a new zone:

Now right-click on the file and select Edit. Be sure you don't just double-click because the default is to "Merge with registry" which we don't want to do yet.

5. Editing the zone's registry key... con't:.

The .reg file should now open up in your default text-editor and you can see all the settings that Zone's "Key" contains. Here we're just going to change the key name from 4 (or whichever one you chose) to "5" (or just the next available number if you already have a 4). Do this by editing the line that reads:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\4]
to read:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\5]
Click here for an image of what the file should look like.

Then save the file and exit your text-editor.

6. Merge the key back into the registry:

Now either double-click the file or right-click and select "Merge." You should get a message from Windows notifying you that the file has successfully been merged into the registry. Click OK.

7. Confirm that the new zone was created:

Now go back into Regedit and navigate to the same key we were at before:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones]
You should now see the zone you just created. Now you have created a new zone and no further work is needed. I will however, show you how to modify this new zone a bit.

8. Modify the new zone in the registry:

In regedit's right pane you should see the contents of the newly created key (our new zone). It should look something like what's on the right.

All the numbers you see from 1001 down to 1E05 are simply the security settings themselves. You don't have to modify them here. You can modify them using the Internet Options panel (I showed you above).

But here you can modify the Display Name, Description and Icon.
To modify the Display Name and Description, simply select it and either right-click and chose modify or go to Edit | Modify.

To change the icon, simply enter the path to the icon file you'd like. *Note: if it's just a single icon, you have to add "#0" (zero) to the end of the filename.

Here you can see my modified settings:

9. Modify the new zone's settings in Internet Explorer:

You're Done! Now you can go into the Tools | Internet Options | Security tab, modify the security settings for this new zone and then add sites to it. To learn more about how to change the individual settings and what they do (actually, I don't have what they do in there, but I'll try to get that up soon), see my Paranoid Internet Explorer User page.

I hope this helps. As always, if you have any comments or suggestions, please .
