Customize
Internet explorer's toolbar background (wallpaper)

|
|

For Internet
Explorer 4 & 5:
Internet explorer 4 & 5 allow you to use the image as your choice
for the background for the toolbar. If you're looking to spruce-up your
browser, this is a quick and easy way to do it.
Update 3/24/01: I just installed Microsoft's
toolbar wallpaper utility (below) and it is neat
but only lets you choose from a limited selection of images. Use the tweak
I show you here and you can select any background image you like.
Your own background for Internet explorer's toolbar.
This one's a cake-walk: I'll walk you through it step-by-step:
- Prepare a background image and save it in bitmap (.BMP) format.
Note the path (ie: e:\pics\water.bmp). Small images that can be tiled
or larger images work best.
*NOTE: The image must be in bitmap format.
- Open Regedit (Start | Run then type regedit).
- Go to HKeyCurrentUser (HKCU) / Software / Microsoft
/ Internet Explorer / Toolbar
- For Internet Explorer 5: modify the string value (REG_SZ) "BackBitmapIE5".
or
for Internet Explorer 4: add the string-value
(REG_SZ) and name it: BackBitmap.
- Modify the BackBitmapIE5 (or BackBitmap) entry so it contains the
path to your background image from step 1 (ie: e:\pics\water.bmp).
To Modify, go to the Edit menu and select
Modify or right-click
and select modify.

That's it! Close all open windows of Internet explorer and start it
again. You should see your new image in the toolbar.
You may want to experiment with various backgrounds to get one you like...
The text labels aren't visible with some darker backgrounds.
(an easy way to do this is to modify the registry once, then save the
different backgrounds you're trying under the same file name).
