Getting your modem to wait to dial if you have voice-mail

6/29/99

If you have voicemail, you can have a repeating tone before your dial-tone.   Sometimes this confuses your modem.  Here's a simple fix:

This works in Windows 98, 95 and NT:

Go to: cpanel | modem | Properties button | Connections tab | Advanced-button

In the "Extra settings" box, enter ATS6=4

Where:

AT  gets the modem's attention, allowing you to issue it commands
S6  is the register that controls how long the modem waits for a dial-tone
4    is the time in seconds the modem waits (the default is 2).  4 seconds should be enough, but feel free to modify this number.

While you're at it, you can disable the Modem's speaker by entering "M" at the end, or if you just want to disable the modem speaker: "ATM"

In Windows : you can also disable the modem speaker using Dial-Up Networking:

  1. Open up Dial-Up Networking
  2. select the entry you use to dial
  3. click the More button
  4. select Edit Entry and modem properties
  5. Click the Configure button for the "Dial Using" modem
  6. Check the box at the bottom labeled "Disable modem speaker"
